Food Forests

SOME FAMILIES BUILDING FOOD FORESTS

If you’ve ever wandered back roads in a developing, tropical country, you know that many of the locals grow much of their own food. You might also have noticed that their food gardens aren’t comprised entirely of small annual vegetables planted in straight rows like ours are. They are typically wild-looking plantings of edible trees, shrubs, vines, and ground covers all mingling effortlessly together, as if Mother Nature had planted the garden according to her own design. These are literally forests of food.

Forest gardening has been the standard for millennia in many tropical regions, but it’s possible in more temperate climes as well. A British chap by the name of Robert Hart first popularized the concept among European and North American gardeners with the publication of his book Forest Gardening: Cultivating an Edible Landscape in the 1980s. Food forests have also figured prominently in the permaculture movement, an approach to designing agricultural systems that mimic natural ecosystems.

Why Food Forests?
Food forests are like the ultimate organic garden. Does a forest need tilling, weeding, fertilizer, or irrigation? Nope. And that’s the goal.

Because they’re mostly perennial crops, there’s no need to till. Not tilling preserves the natural soil structure, preventing the loss of topsoil and allowing all the little microbes and soil critters to do their jobs, cycling nutrients and maintaining fertility. The deep roots of trees and shrubs make them much more drought tolerant than annual vegetables, and they shade the smaller plants below, keeping everything lush and moist in a self-maintaining—in other words, a highly sustainable—system.

Step 1: CHOOSE PLANTS
The first step in establishing a food forest is to choose your plants. The largest plants will reach into the sun, so most common fruiting trees and shrubs are fair game. The smaller plants generally need to be more shade tolerant, as they will be in the under story. But you can leave sunny patches here and there—like little forest clearings—to accommodate species that need more light (though see Step 3 for a trick to make the most of the available sunlight).

Winter is the ideal time to get started, because most edible trees, shrubs, vines, and herbaceous plants can be purchased and planted while dormant, which is better for the plants—and for your bank account. That’s because at this time of year they are sold in “bare root” form—meaning without soil or a pot—which gives the roots a more natural structure and costs less for nurseries to produce. Bare root plants are typically ordered in January or February, for planting in early March, or as soon as the ground thaws in your area. Naturally, you’ll want to stick with species that are well-adapted to your region.

CANOPY: This layer is primarily for large nut trees that require full sun throughout the day, such as pecans, walnuts, and chestnuts, all of which mature to a height of 50 feet or more.

UNDER STORY TREES: This layer is for smaller nut trees, like filberts, and the majority of fruit trees. The most shade tolerant fruit trees include native North American species like black mulberry, American persimmon and pawpaw, though many other fruit trees will produce a respectable crop in partial shade.

Vines: Grapes, kiwis, and passion fruit are the most well-known edible vines, though there are many other more obscure specimens to consider, some of which are quite shade tolerant, such as akebia (edible fruit), chayote (a perennial squash), and groundnuts (perennial root crop). Kolomitka kiwi, a close relative of the fuzzy kiwis found in supermarkets, is among the most shade-tolerant vines.

SHRUBS: A large number of fruiting shrubs thrive in partial shade, including gooseberries, currants, service berries, huckleberry, elderberry, aronia, and honey berry, along with the “super foods” sea berry and goji. Blackberry and Blueberry bushes will work well here in the U.S.

HERBACEOUS PLANTS: This category includes not only plants commonly thought of as herbs—rosemary, thyme, oregano, lavender, mint and sage are a few of the top perennial culinary herbs to consider for your forest garden—but is a catch-all term for all leafy plants that go dormant below ground in winter and re-sprout from their roots in spring. This layer is where perennial vegetables, like artichokes, rhubarb, asparagus and “tree collards” fit in.

GROUND COVERS: These are perennial plants that spread horizontally to colonize the ground plane. Edible examples include alpine strawberries (a shade tolerant delicacy), sorrel (a French salad green), nasturtiums (has edible flowers and leaves), and watercress (requires wet soil), all of which tolerate part shade.

RHIZOSPERE: This refers to root crops. It’s a bit misleading to call it a separate layer, since the top portion of a root crop may be a vine, shrub, ground cover or herb, but it’s Hart’s way of reminding us to consider the food-producing potential of every possible ecological niche. Most common root crops are sun-loving annuals, however so you’ll have to look to more obscure species, such as the fabled Andean root vegetables oca, ulluco, yacon, and mashua, for shade-tolerant varieties.

Step 2: PREPARE THE GROUND
Choose an open, sunny location for your forest garden. It can be as small as 100 square feet—a single fruit tree and an assortment of understory plants—or multiple acres. At the larger, commercial-scale end of the spectrum, forest gardening is often referred to as agroforestry. A number of tropical crops, including coffee and chocolate, are grown commercially in this way, though commercial agroforestry is uncommon in North America (other than in the context of timber plantations).

Unlike preparing for a conventional vegetable garden, there is no need to till the earth and form it into beds in preparation for a forest garden. Instead, dig a hole for each individual plant, just as if you were planting ornamental shrubs and trees. However, if the soil quality is poor, you may wish to “top-dress” the entire planting area with several inches of compost prior to planting.

One situation in which raised beds are desirable in a food forest is where drainage is poor. But rather than make the effort to construct conventional raised beds from wood, you may opt to sculpt the earth into low, broad mounds at the location of each tree. Smaller plants may then be positioned along the slopes of the mounds. A variation on this approach is to sculpt the earth into long linear “swales,” which consist of a raised berm (to provide a well-drained planting location) and a broad, shallow ditch (to collect rainwater runoff and force it to percolate into the soil beneath the planting berm).

You will need to eliminate any weeds, grass or other existing vegetation prior to planting. This can be done manually, or by smothering them under a “sheet mulch,” a permaculture tactic in which sheets of cardboard are overlaid with several inches of mulch on top of the vegetation, starving the plants for light and causing them to compost in place. Compost may be added as a layer between the cardboard and the mulch to add extra nutrients. Permaculturists often employ sheet mulching in conjunction with swales to enhance the area prior to planting.

When you’re ready to plant, simply brush aside the mulch and cut holes in the cardboard just big enough to dig a planting hole at the location of each plant. Then slide the mulch back around the newly installed plant. Maintaining a deep mulch is the key to preventing weeds, conserving soil moisture and boosting organic matter—all things that will help your food forest be self-maintaining and self-sufficient
.
Step 3: PLANT
The next step is to arrange your plants in the landscape. Position the tallest species (i.e. the ‘canopy’ plants) at the northern end of the planting area, with progressively smaller plants toward the southern end. This way the taller plants will cast less shade on the smaller ones, especially at the beginning and end of the growing season when the days are shorter and the sun hangs lower in the sky.

Of course, truly shade tolerant plants may be interspersed throughout the understory of the forest garden. You might even consider cultivating mushrooms in the shadiest zones once the large trees have matured. Edible vines may be planted on any accessible fences, arbors, or walls, and you can also train vines up trees, just like Mother Nature does—just be sure the tree is significantly larger than the vine to avoid the tree getting smothered.

The edges of the food forest are suitable for sun-loving annual vegetables, if you wish to include them. Also, keep in mind that it takes decades for large tree to reach their mature size, so in the early years of a food forest there is ample sunlight. Plant sun-loving species in the open spaces between trees and then replace them with more shade-tolerant plants as the forest matures. Good info by Modern Farmer

Pregnancy

Published April 12, 2023 by tindertender

“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”.

For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too.

Even if a pregnancy doesn’t go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream.

Research has shown that if a mother’s heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart.

The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby.

How cool is that?

This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant.

It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back – so that the baby can develop safely and survive.

Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave?

Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?”

If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them.

“Assault” Weapons in Washington State

Published April 6, 2023 by tindertender

I’m seeing a lot of ignorant posts calling for more gun control laws. Here’s some info to help combat the ignorance.

I know many people aren’t even aware of the restrictive gun laws that are already in place in our state because your posts are saying you want to ban things that are already banned in our state. Stop allowing fear-mongering media and politicians to convince you that we need tougher laws because we have them already and criminals don’t care.

The only thing an “assault rifle” does to get that ignorant label is: 1-They have black plastic outer parts instead of wood/metal. 2-They eject the empty bullet cartridge and load the next round using the gas pressure from firing a bullet instead of manually ejecting and loading. (More than 70% of hunting rifles use the same EXACT mechanics and function exactly the same but “look” less scary.) 3-That’s IT. It is not a weapon of mass destruction. It fires one single shot for each trigger pull, just like a revolver, a bolt action rifle, a shotgun.

The gun show loopholes have been closed in our state. We have mandatory background checks and a waiting period for EVERY SINGLE GUN SALE in our state. They just banned the so-called “assault rifles” last week in our state. There are mandatory training courses to take in our state. They banned high capacity magazines in our state. There is nothing left for them to “pass” for gun safety.

Every single law that politicians are trying to pass at this point to “protect the children” is literally them disarming the populace so they can do whatever they want. We’ve seen this scenario play out over and over and over with horrifying results throughout history.

These criminals that are shooting up schools didn’t care about any of the gun control laws that are in place because they are not going to abide by any laws. If they did, the laws banning murder and assault would have stopped them without the need for any other laws.

People need to stop taking away peoples rights to defend themselves under the guise of trying to save children.

Blind, ignorant sheep are the ones asking for harder laws. We HAVE THEM. They are not doing any good.

If you want to save children, advocate for better mental health care and ban highly processed foods because crazy people don’t follow laws, and children are 28 times more likely to die from obesity than from guns.

Laughter

Published April 6, 2023 by tindertender

There’s a co-worker in the next room over. I hear him talking and have for the past year or so. He’s older, loves video games and movies, is married, quite calm in the face of agitation, and he laughs all the time. Sometimes at stuff that isn’t funny, like laughing is just one of his go to’s as he walks away from someone, or has any kind of conversation.

There’s a gal here who laughs all the time too. I listen and I wonder what’s wrong with them that they find so many things funny.

Then I wonder, is there something wrong with me that I see so much cause for seriousness in the world?

Two different personalities… some just let stuff roll off them with a laugh, others tend to analyze things, holding onto them and the inner friction it creates.

I’d like to laugh more, but laughing in todays circumstances seems sort of shallow.

Maybe I’ve been taking the last 20 years of spiritual attack too personally. Maybe I really just need to “disengage”, however that might look.

Yes, I’d prefer to laugh more, if only folks would stop messing around in my “fields”.

… Or despite the interference.

Marriage: Merging Bloodlines

Published April 5, 2023 by tindertender

It never really struck me until the ”dream” I had about it two nights ago.

Two fathers, One with 4 daughters, One with several sons … 5?

The fathers were investigating the bloodline, considering if it were worth connecting and interbreeding within.

I figure at least 1 daughter will merge with the others son.

For some families, bloodlines, this consideration is critical. Are they of good stock? Are they well to do? How do they conduct themselves, in public and private? Are they clean? Are they respectable? Are they held in high esteem? Are they of force? Or Power? Are they pure, as in having innocence? This is the family line we’re talking about after all.

In other places, it’s about loooove …. Falling in love, uniting bloodlines, falling out of love, separating.
Falling in love again, uniting bloodlines, falling out of love, separating. And so on.

Cording …

When I think of this, women who have perhaps 3 or 4 children with different men, and men who father children with different women … I think about all the bloodlines that individual and those created by the union, can actually birth into. Gets messy if you’re into reincarnation. The controllers probably none too happy about the mess.

How to correct it?

Eliminate those who are of messy bloodlines, move them into a separate realm.

How?

Patented technology, and the good ol’ fashioned way of transition.

Bloodlines are important for offspring and generations to come.

But in some places it’s not about wealth or blood or status or stature… it’s about that oh so sweet and mostly fleeting thing called “love” … which many mistake as lust.

How to clean up the bloodlines?

Unravel time, reconstruct it. Allow vibrational/generational patterns to magnetize to their specific match.

Here’s a catch tho…

Before we were birthed into this material body, we Were already. From whence did we come? What bloodlines were those? Our origins. “Before” this dense body/mind set.

Remembering the dream.

I HAD TO STAY AWAY TO HEAL

Published April 5, 2023 by tindertender

Because that’s what we brave do, HEAL.

Cure not to repeat the same mistakes.
Heal so as not to kill alien worlds.
Healing so as not to dirty other hearts.
Heal so as not to harm.
Cure not to give half love.
Cure not to be conformist.
Heal to realize that flowers grow in gardens, not in the desert.
Heal so as not to self-destruct.
Heal to clean my bowels.

And even though my throat has thousands of knots.

And even though it was almost impossible for me to break old habits, I wanted to heal, because that’s what the brave do.

Forgive.
Love.
Release.
Heal.

There is still a long way to go, the universe knows that I still have a long way to go, but day by day I am removing from my skin what made me suffer.

“I’m doing this, I’m doing this…” I keep healing the most important person in my life, I keep healing FOR ME…

When a narcissist says “I LOVE YOU” this is what it means:

Published April 5, 2023 by tindertender

When a narcissist says “I LOVE YOU,” those words take on a whole different meaning. This is a letter written from the perspective of the narcissist for the souls who have fallen in love with someone who can never love them.

Dear collegue,

I’m going to say something that I would never say or admit to you.

When I say “I LOVE YOU”, I mean that I love the way you want to believe that I love you madly.

I love the things you do for me.

I love the power you give me to take advantage of your goodness by exploiting your good intentions.

Making you feel worse makes me feel better.

I love making you feel insignificant.

I love the fact that your life revolves only around me. You fix my problems, you solve my doubts, you ease my pain.

I love that all your time is dedicated to me, not to you, and how your attention is only for me.

I love making you doubt yourself and question your own sanity. You don’t know what’s right or what’s real unless I tell you.

“I LOVE YOU” means that I need you because I need someone who won’t abandon me. I need someone I can use as a punching bag.

Someone to make me feel good.

I love how my expectations of you are constantly increasing, while your expectations of me are gradually decreasing.

I love seeing failure and disappointment on your face.

When I say “I LOVE YOU”, I mean love by hate towards you.

I love myself vicariously through the love you feel for me. And I need you to suffer because I hate having to depend on you for this.

I love how my happiness is your responsibility.

I love how I feel when you are near me. How can I become a victim when you try to bring up one of my many personality flaws or harmful behaviors.

I love how I make you feel horrible when you mention something I did that hurt you.

Like you won’t leave me because you’re hooked on this toxic relationship.

I love how you support me and that I have never had to support you. Why would he do that? The things you’ll never get keep you with me.

I love how you think you are with a person who loves you.

But I am a person who shows love and affection as a manipulative tool.

I love how you need me and how you think you are with the right person.

How I make you feel unworthy and insignificant.

When I say “I LOVE YOU,” it’s not because of what love really stands for. When I say “I LOVE YOU”, it means I love how you respect my rules and how you live by them.

You need to know that I will use hurtful words and manipulation tactics under the guise of love.

You will never change me.

We both know this isn’t real. We both should know.

Regards,
Your narcissist.

Strong souls are under attack from childhood…

Published April 4, 2023 by tindertender

It was hard for the High Vibrational Souls to penetrate here in the 🌎.

When the arrival of a soul of a higher order about to incarnate the matrix reacts by transmitting the signal “attention to all” its commands.

And immediately, opposing forces fall upon that baby yet to prevent birth, provide for an early death, or to extinguish and steal his potential to exercise his gifts.

Externally, this may manifest itself as problems during pregnancy, childbirth. The child is born in the most difficult environment to degrade them as much as possible.

The system accurately reads vulnerabilities and problem points in order to strike them ruthlessly and consistently.

The task is to deprive her of self-confidence, destroy the inner core, be subjected to physical and psychological violence, incessant criticism and negativity.

The main thing is to stop loving yourself, disconnect from your soul and believe in others – it has no value – that you have to live like everyone else, do what you are told, not believe in yourself, in your own ability, handing over your power to someone else.

Yes, powerful souls can choose this cruel journey to lift experiences to more difficult levels.

But having descended to these lower vibrations you instantly realize that it’s not as simple as it seemed “from above”.

But there’s nowhere to go and not everyone passes that test of rising in those conditions and still spreading positive vibes around you.

This path symbolizes the lotus flower growing strong roots to overcome the darkness of the mud, overcoming all obstacles.

Similarly, a Human, on the spiritual path, goes through the experience of negativity.

So if sometimes you feel tired, think this is the darkest hour before Dawn, soon your lotus flower will surface.
