Leonard Peltier has been Freed!!

President Joe Biden has commuted the life sentence of Native American activist Leonard Peltier, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under home confinement. Peltier, now 80 years old, was convicted in 1977 for the 1975 killings of two FBI agents during a standoff at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His conviction has been a subject of controversy, with numerous advocates, including human rights organizations and international figures, arguing that he was wrongfully convicted and did not receive a fair trial.

Despite being denied parole as recently as July 2024, Peltier’s commutation reflects a significant shift in his case. His supporters view this decision as a step toward justice and reconciliation for Native American communities. Peltier is expected to reside with his tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, in North Dakota, where preparations have been made for his return.
