SEPARATION OF THE COLLECTIVE

Published September 29, 2020 by tindertender

If you go to the southwest desert and catch 100 red fire ants as well as 100 large black ants and put them in a jar, at first, nothing will happen.

However, if you violently shake the jar and dump them back on the ground the ants will fight until they eventually kill each other.

The thing is, the red ants think the black ants are the enemy and vice versa, when in reality, the real enemy is the person who shook the jar.

This is exactly what’s happening in society today
Liberal vs Conservative
Black vs White
Pro Mask vs Anti Mask

The real question we need to be asking ourselves is who’s shaking the jar and why?

  • I kind of understand what that post is trying to get at, but the terminology is a bit wrong and can be misleading to people who don’t think any deeper than the surface level that this meme sits at.

Liberals Vs conservatives is, at least with our current governments (US/UK and some in the EU) anti-fascism Vs fascism (respectively)
Black Vs white is actually anti-racists Vs racists
Anti-mask Vs pro-mask is actually anti-science Vs science.

This post incorrectly tried to create an equivalency between the two stances in each category, as if both are equally correct just different opinions, which is not the case.

For example, I am white but am definitely on the side of the BLM protests as everyone should be. It’s not a “black Vs white” issue at all and to suggest so is to imply that all white people by default don’t want equal rights and treatment for black people.

Similarly, the right has moved so far to the right it now ticks a lot of the boxes for fascism. Umberto Eco’s short essay on ur-fascism goes into the signs of fascist politics and you could fit so many examples from both the US and the UK; Trump in the US ticks nearly all the fascism boxes, most recently in his refusal to say anything bad about white supremacy. In the UK, the Tories and Boris Johnson in particular, fit into many of those boxes. As we know, fascism is a bad thing (note how many times Donald trump has railed against “antifa” which literally means “anti-fascist”), so that’s why it’s anti-fascism Vs fascism.

Re: the mask debate, general scientific consensus is that masks protect other people from your contagions if you have the disease, and if everyone wore masks and followed scientific (note: not necessarily the same as governmental) guidance, transmission rates would go down significantly.
This is why those that refuse to wear masks for anything other than a legitimate medical reason (at which point they should be quarantined anyway) are not merely exercising their right, they are endangering others due to selfishness.

So yeah while this post kind of nearly works, it has a lot of issues in how it talks about the issues people are facing. Whether it’s deliberate by the author of the meme, or accidental because they don’t understand the problems they claim to be in the middle of, is uncertain.
