Maybe, Maybe Not

Laughter rings out as an animal is hurt.
Hate filled speech fills the room, as others are appalled.
Truth of hearts comes out into the open,
The lack of care apparent.

The world is falling into chaos
And very few seem to notice.
Those who do are shunned and called names
By those who wish to promote violence.

They claim it is not hurtful.
When did it not hurt, when someone laughed
At the surprise and shock of your pain?
They’re only animals, they say,
But the real animal is on display.

Someday they’ll know.
Someday they’ll wish it hadn’t been.
They’ll want to redo it all
And prove that there’s goodness within.

maybe, maybe not
